Artist Statement
My name is Betsy and I’m a self-taught artist that lives in San Diego. I am an enthusiastic and passionate person by nature who used to work in foreign policy and national security in Washington, DC. Due to a rare degenerative neuromuscular disease, I unfortunately had to retire, but it also led me to continue my passion for painting, and to become a full-time abstract artist.
To share my artwork with others fills my soul. One of the greatest joys is to watch people’s reactions. When a piece of my work “speaks” to someone or triggers an emotional response, I know they must have it no matter what.
When I start a painting, I have no idea what’s going to come out. I take a deep breath, pick up my brush and my imagination takes hold.
It is only as the paint and my brush flow that I find the direction I’m heading - this aligns with my wanderlust personality. I have travelled all over the world and have found that my best adventures and experiences were when I was “lost or didn’t have a plan.”
For me, the act of creating art is not only special, but also a privilege. It is a way to communicate and connect with friends and strangers in a way that would not be possible otherwise.
